The importer, while nice, could do with more memory functions and better matching. On the downside, the mutual fund basis calculation is obtuse and I've never managed to figure out what I'm doing wrong to get the basis to report correctly. If the financial institution supports some well known standards, it can retrieve transactions online, including reconciliation with already entered items. The stock and mutual fund tracking features are reasonably good and includes online retrieval of quotes. This is similar to notions that other accounting tools offer, but there is no effort here to hide the accounting.īudgeting features exist, but I've never used them. It is focused on double entry accounting, and as such, every transaction has a category or balancing transaction. The most common complaint is that it is too complex for personal use, only suited for business use, but I've been using it successfully for ten years now (starting on Linux and migrating to Mac years later). I rather just buy a 1 year subscription for $40-50 when they go on sale at Newegg or EBay periodically.This is a full featured accounting tool. So while I hate the subscription fee Quicken charges as much as anyone, I rather pay 50 some odd dollars a year and keep all my data under my control on my PC (turn off all of Quicken's features for storing stuff online) than have some dubious outfit with questionable ethics and security and probably with offshore employees having access to my data. That 3rd party in this case will often be a smaller company. All the "free" options are web based which means you are putting your financial and personal data in the hands of some 3rd party which is storing it open to a web interface. It has been discussed on this board before, but Quicken remains to my knowledge the only personal finance option that is client based. Yes - there does indeed appear to FINALLY be a free online application to challenge Quicken and QB! None of the Mint upsells, superior reporting options. Uses Plaid to securely link financial accounts. My CPA requests financial statements rather than uploading company or personal Intuit files.
